As of March 2011, there were about 3.3 million cattle, 7 million pigs, and 140 million poultry in Republic of Korea, producing about 46.5 million tons of animal manure annually. About 87% of the total produced waste is recycled to land as compost and liquid organic fertilizer. Liquid organic fertilizer contains plenty of organic nutrients; it is also free from pathogens, odor, unfavorable weed seeds, and toxic materials. Most liquid fertilizers in Korea are produced through aerobic liquid composting process (Autothermal thermophilic aerobic digestion-ATAD). Sawdust bedding is the most prevalent dairy manure collection method in Korea. More than 90% of small-scale dairy farms use organic bedding materials. Organic bedding materials absorb moisture from manure and provide cushion to cattle. Dairy farms normally replace used organic bedding material with fresh ones every 12 months. The removed bedding materials are turned to compost through static pile and aerated static pile composting processes. Korean government encourages farmers to reuse animal manure as liquid fertilizer and compost because they help reduce chemical fertilizer consumption and improve soil quality, thereby promoting sustainable agriculture.
